About the authors

Alette Vonk

Alette Vonk is a lecturer intercultural management at the University of Leiden. She’s also a seasoned consultant on intercultural management and organizational change since 2012.

Alette holds a MSc. Development Sociology and as a part of these studies she spent her first half year in Africa, in Cameroon, researching rural economic development. After graduation she worked in grassroots community development in two challenged neighborhoods in The Hague, one with nationalist Dutch tendencies; the other almost entirely inhabited by non-western migrants. On top, she worked in the development business in West Africa for 10 years, in gender, good governance and organizational development (Benin and Ghana).

Alette has written peer reviewed articles on Culture and OD and she has written several shorter articles on doing business in Kenya on the Cube in Platform, about the Dutch culture for the Xpat Journal, and other articles on Africa for the Newsletter Jobnet Africa. Last but not least, she’s the co-author of the book “See what the Dutch Say.”

Vasco Freitas Silva

Vasco Silva is an executive board member of Strong Charon SA, a leading security company in Portugal with almost 5.000 employees and 100 million revenues.

Silva graduated in Chemical Engineering at the Oporto University, with one of the best final classifications in his course. After being granted a scholarship from the Portuguese Government, he attended and accomplished his PhD in Chemical Engineering, doing research in the renowned research institutes GKSS and German Aerospace Centre in Germany. He published 13 scientific articles in international reviews, 3 scientific articles in Portuguese reviews and one book chapter.

Silva’s management career covers 17 years in which he has held various roles, such as, R&D Manager, Sales Manager, Agency Manager, Country Manager and, finally, Board Member. In 2010, he started an almost 7 years business mission in Angola, Sub-Saharan Africa, establishing an engineering subsidiary for a multinational Portuguese company present is several countries. During his Africa mission, he also attended several executive training programs at the Harvard Business School, having the Alumni status of this US University.
